Not sure why — Edit: on second thought, we've watched Todd Solondz' fantastic movie Wiener Dog around New Year's Eve — but I had a wiener dog in my mind and how it would be fun to turn it into a scroller. Just walking on screen and then having a realllllly long body that would bounce from time to time with the text on it and the bottom part following up at the end. All of that in minimalistic PETSCII Art, which means, one line for the text and one line above and below tops.
The first doodle came up bigger than expected and went off-rails right away, but there's just something goofy about wieners, right?
Being more of a cat person myself, the dog of course doesn't really resemble a wiener dog at all, except it being long with short legs.
Let's go with a longer snout. Well, nope, still not right, right?
Anyway, I knew that Goerp would be at BCC Party #19 this weekend, so I looked up an checked their compos. Hmm... a PETSCII compo. Maybe, I can turn this into something like "Stop and enjoy a flower from time to time"-hippie message pic, it's kinda almost there already, isn't it?
Looking through the party page, I didn't really find any compo rules, so I turned to CSDb for more info but there wasn't really anything there either. All I found was a forum thread and a post with some general rules and a short discussion about dick pics not being welcomed due to the party being steamed on Twitch.
Well, never mind the flower smelling, let's hitch onto that for a little joke entry :-)
Giving my Wiener some persective was surprisingly easy, double the legs and turn that lil' head around. Made the snout a bit pointier and with all that, it finally did start resemling a wiener dog. Hurrah!
Going with a comic look, so let's add a thought-bubble for landing the (lame) joke. Also, tears.
Now, what shall we do with the background? Let's go with a simple frame which would also make the bubble pop some more.
OK, at this point, I though I'm done. I mean, it's all there already, right? But today's friday, deadline's saturday, so there's room for more tweaks.
Eyes... check
Tears... check
Mouth... check
Snout... check
Thought bubble... check
Wait a minute... is that another wiener dog? Really?
And it farts?
OK, fine, why not. It's a silly pic anyway, so let's get ridiculous!
Double the dogs, double the tweaks. But that's OK. It's fun, and it is — to me — funny.
It's getting late and I'm running out of time (no time for pixeling on Saturday), so a final look and I'm done! Updating my submission and off it goes!
Honestly, I'm not sure why all my animals are crying, but I had a blast working on this one. It started rather basic but turned into something not so bad looking and I'm sure it will get a laugh or two at the party.
