PUNKSCII

#7 in "ASCII/ANSI/PETSCII" compo @ Revision 2025

How it started

Sadly, I don't have any stages from the very start which was just me painting rainbow colored horizontal stripes, first with full chars, later with quater-block ones and going finer with checkerboard chars. After some tweaking, I've ended up with a neat pattern that's still visible in the right hand side of the first pic.

Adding a wave to the "raster bars" was just me fooling around and trying to get some more shading working, but that was really just a little experiment.

The pic really started with the "PETSCII" font and again, what's visible on the first pic is not the first font but the tenth-ish iteration, going ping-pong with the - at the same time but on another copy of the pic - "Punks" one, as seen on the second pic here. Also, while going back and forth, the double II became one I with two dots and Punks got shorted to Punx.

Last, the top left corner came in due to the logo cutting of an edge and thus I somehow felt that the "raster bar" pattern should resolve in an interesting way.

Before I forget mentioning it, pixeling the logo naturally led to this becoming an entry for the C64GFX.com CharSet Logo Compo, especially as the "PETSCII PUNKS" name was a direct reaction to a comment Raistlin made on Aomeba's Artline logo, which kinda was disqualified for the compo. See, Aomeba has seen my MC PETSCII pic Hidden Faces and got inspired — nevermind my MC PETSCII Smilies, but having somebody pick up a spark and create something new out of it feels great — exploring this weird PETSCII mode and released this real banger of a logo. Too bad, the compo orgas decided that that's not "pure" PETSCII and thus not a valid PETSCII entry and, well, blah blah blah, boring gatekeeping and sure, orgas are always right for their compos but come on, "pure PETSCII" does not only sound bad and all it's used for is trying to belittle MC/ECM/Whatever PETSCII experiments. It's a real "my farts don't stink" thing.

Anyway, the very second I've read the comment, "PETSCII Punks" was born somewhere in my head and manifested a day later in this doodle session.

Next up, bringing the logo together on the same screen. PETSCII turned into Pixel, which on the one hand broadens the scope and also clears up that it's Punx and not Punk thankd to doubleling the X in the logo.

The squares got shifted into the center due to me having right shifted the whole Punx pic.

Having the logo more or less done, let's work on the backdrop. Going vertical was an idea that only lasted a couple of seconds; it looked fresh but didn't felt right with the slanted logo.

Back to horizontal lines and re-creating the inital pattern. Also, the pattern disintegrating into bigger squares was picked up for the corner.

Following through with the backdrop.

Right after calling it quits for the day, a solution for the top middle part popped up: how about turning the backdrop into a big triangle, counter-balancing the logo?

Below, a quick workstage for saving this idea.

A triangle it is and thus the coloring has to be tweaked to match the shape. Also, lots of tiny tweaks here and there while working on the pic.

Getting closer to a coherent pic meant that the checkerboard chars (and thus the inital pattern) had to be removed.

And some last tweaks, getting ready for Revision 2025

What? Revision and not the CharSet Logo compo?

Nope, and here's why: it has of course nothing to do with Raistlin's comment, but the Pixel Punx struck a nerve and doing a logo for a non-existing group is lamer than doing a logo for an existing group. Say Hello! to the Pixel Punx, a new C64 group :-)

While polishing up the logo, I've also worked on some related Pixel Punx pics that hopefully see the light of day soon.

But again, why Revision?

Because why not. There's still plenty of time for doing other CharSet Logo Compo entries and introducing a new group at the world's biggest demo party was just something that felt right (even though it's a rather hush introduction).

But Revision? A party where you have to pay for your remote entries doesn't sound very Punk!

I've spent money for CSDb as well as for PETSCII Editor, so spending money to keep the scene and demo parties afloat is IMHO money spent well. Also, whoa, stereotypes, man!?

OK, enough with this talking-to-myself nonsense, here's the final pic:

Conclusio

Haven't really envisioned founding a new demo/gfx group and also haven't had Revision 2025 on my radar, but things happen and — as always — I'm happy for whatever triggers or accidents pop up along the way sparking a pic. It's has everything I'm looking for, all the colors, all the high-res looking chars and on top of that, a new path for me to follow on the journey through my life as a demo scener.

Post party notes

First time watching a textmode compo what isn't limited to PETSCII only and boy, there were some great pix there.

Here's a snippet from the party (sadly, no commentary for this compo):

And here are the results; didn't even make it onto the results slide /o\

What's CSDb thinking about it

jmin (20.04.2025)

Thx, folks!

Worrior1 (20.04.2025)

Nice background and very readable font. I like this.

Pac (20.04.2025)

Really nice. I espeially like the background. It suggests way higher resolution.

Katon (20.04.2025)

Awesome!
